UNILORIN Don Advises FG, States To Provide Conducive Environment To Teach, Learn Mathematics
A Don, Prof. Olubunmi Abidemi Fadipe-Joseph at the University of Ilorin has called on the Federal and State Governments to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning Mathematics in the country.
The Professor of mathematics, while delivering the 240th Inaugural lecture titled: “Mathematics Is For All, ” at the University of Ilorin main auditorium, said children can be engaged in Arithmetics at the elementary level.
She pointed out that there are many challenges for girls in particular, which can be addressed through the introduction of Maths Clubs, Quizz and other competitions.
Fadipe-Joseph stressed the importance of mathematics in girl-child education, saying that school girls should be assisted to show more interest in mathematics as a study.
According to her, many are made to believe that Mathematics is a course mainly for male students, but I believe if their male counterparts can do it, they can do better.
Fadipe-Joseph, a first class graduate of mathematics while highlighting the challenges for Girls in mathematics said “Lack of mentors, mentoring and a guide in the right direction and lack of self-esteem. Lack of confidence, lack of encouragement, environmental/ societal factors, family exposure, poverty, inconsistency in the academic calendar, funding among others” she started
She, however, stressed the need to give girls opportunities to build their confidence in mathematics, adding that the government, parents and teachers should provide a conducive environment for girls.
“Marriage is cherished in Africa. Women are faced with the challenges of combining work and family responsibilities.
“Regular talks on how to choose a mentor and how to balance career and family are necessary. With determination, women can manage careers, work and family lives by proper planning time.
“There should be an age benefit for women with children when applying for any support. This will also give women the opportunity to interact with other women in Mathematics,
“Women should be encouraged to attend workshops, and seminars and allowed to interact with other people in their various professions to gain confidence,” she added.
Fadipe-Joseph added that awards should be introduced at various levels to encourage both males and females to study Mathematics.
