Subsidy: PSN President Advises Nigerians to Adjust Expenses to Survive Subsidy Removal
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) on Friday in Ilorin admonished Nigerians to adjust their expenses as a result of the hardship faced over the fuel subsidy removal.
Prof Cyril Usifoh, the PSN National President made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the sidelines of the 2023 Annual Pharmacy Week by PSN-Kwara.
The theme of the Week is entitled: “Implementing Pharmacy Act 2022 for Good Pharmacy Practice”.
Usifoh who observed that Nigerians are living in a very pitiable condition, lamented that salaries are not going up.
“Individuals must adjust their expenses, that’s the underlining factor. A salary increase in the nearest future is envisaged but we don’t know when.
“So if we can adjust our expenses, we can survive this time and when salary comes, we will survive better,” he said.
Similarly, the PSN President explained that Pharmacy Week is an opportunity for members to gather together to educate the Nigerian public on what pharmacists are and what they do as custodians of drugs.
Usifoh warned the youth to avoid drug abuse while describing drugs as poison which can kill.
In his lecture, Mr Olumide Akintayo, the Past President of PSN, spoke on the theme entitled: “Implementing Pharmacy Act 2022 for Good Pharmacy Practice”.
He explained that there are two major pharmacy laws, including the contemporary one which is the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria Act.
According to him, it is designed to adequately protect consumers of medicine in Nigeria.
He explained further that a certain section compels anybody who wants to stock, sell, dispense, manufacture, import and market drugs to pass through inspection to meet the ultimatum standard.
Akintayo stated that the law is applicable both for the private and public sector, adding that the Council has the power to seal a tertiary hospital if they violate any of its laws.
The expert urged members to uphold the standards of Pharmacy, ensure compliance with laid down regulatory frameworks, and remain diligent, ethical and resilient in delivering good pharmaceutical services to the populace.
Speaking also, Mr Adejuwon Otelaja, the PSN-Kwara Chairman explained that the Week includes free medical and health intervention offered to indigent people in Fufu, Ilorin South Local Government.
He said that it also involved radio talk shows and walking against drug abuse, adding that the Society has partnered with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to curb the menace in Kwara.
He warned that the newly revived Pharmacy Act has stiff penalties for people that irrationally sell these drugs.
“Some people that are licensed to keep these drugs in trust and are abusing that trust for pecuniary reason will be dealt with decisively,” he said.
Otelaja reiterated the resolve of the PSN-Kwara to rid the state of drug abuse among youths, adding that the statics of Kwara, having the highest number of drug abuse in North Central is unacceptable and should be reversed. (NAN)
