Court Remands Man For Alleged Illicit Drug Deals

Justice Hadiza Shagari of the Federal High Court, Kaduna on Thursday, remanded a 30-year-old man, Usman Abdulraman, in a correctional centre for alleged dealings in illicit drugs.

Shagari adjourned the case until March 15 for a review of the facts.

This is after the defendant pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) charged Abdulraman before the court.

The NDLEA Prosecutor, Mr T. J. Atserhegh, alleged that Abdulraman was arrested on Jan. 30, in Malali area of Kaduna with nine kilogrammes of cannabis sativa.

Atserhegh also alleged that the agency caught Abdulraman with the substances in his car during a stop and search.

He said the defendant could not give a satisfactory explanation of what he was doing with it.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 11 (b) of the NDLEA Act.

The prosecution told the court that he relied on the plea taken by the defendant and applied for a date for a review of the facts.

He said that the forensic result of the drug was not ready.

Atserhegh, therefore, requested that the defendant be remanded in a correctional centre, pending the outcome of the result.
