Correctional Service Inaugurates Board of Parole In Kwara
By Afusat Agunbiade-Oladipo
The Nigerian Correctional Service has inaugurated a 10-member of Board of Parole in order to decongest the correction centres in Kwara.
The state Controller of the service, Mr AbdulSalami AbdulRaheem, explained that the aim was to decongest the centres all over the country.
According to him, the parole was inaugurated for temporary release of inmates who had served their one third of their jail terms and of good behaviour to continue their sentence outside.
“The parole officer will be assigned to each inmate to monitor their behaviour, but if the inmate violate the rules the officer is going to be returned to the correctional centre,” he said.
He added that the board would decide eligible inmates qualified for release.
The Chairman of the board, retired Justice Mathew Adewara, commended the state controller of Correctional Service for counting them worthy of the appointment.
“On behalf of myself and other members of Kwara State Parole Board, I hereby thanked and appreciate the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
“We are fully aware of the necessity of establishing parole boards in all states of the Federation at this time.
“First, Parole is designed as an opportunity for a prisoner to transition back into the society and restrictions on parolees are supposed to encourage good behaviour after incarceration.
“In fact, before the prisoners get out of custody, the possibility of parole gives them an incentive to avoid trouble.
“Secondly, Parole also reduces prison over-crowding and grants offenders who are considered unlikely to harm others the benefit of supervised life in society.
“Thirdly, Parole helps the government to cut down the high cost of maintaining large prison populations while keeping the population safe,” the chairman added.
Adewara promised that they would put in their best to perform the task ahead diligently for the realisation of the objectives of establishing the state Parole Board.((NAN)
