VC Al-Hikmah Varsity Urges Parents To Devote More Time For Their Children Against Societal Ills

The Vice-Chancellor, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Prof. Noah Yusuf, has called on parents and the society at large to devote more attention to their children and wards against societal ills.

Yusuf made the call at the 12th convocation ceremony of the University held at the institution’s Auditorium, Ilorin on Saturday.

Yusuf stressed the need to individually and collectively, join hands together with NDLEA ans the government to fight this ugly monster – drug abuse.

The VC implored the graduands not to forget all the moral values the University has inculcate in them as they are now proud ambassadors of the University.

The Vice Chancellor also urged graduands of the institution not to drag the good name and sterling image of the institution into the mud

“Thanks to IT revolution, today graduates have vast opportunities to explore in the digital space which can earn them as much as they can explore, you can even secure international jobs and get paid in foreign currency while you are still based in Nigeria.

“While many of our youths are entrapped by the current misplacement of values and decadence in the society with such anti-social acts as drug abuse, cultism, yahoo-yahoo, among others, those who are “immuned” from these viruses are the sure accomplishers, the champions and our future leaders”

“Please, reach high, work hard, commit yourself to the common good, participate actively in the civil life, make the world a better place than it is today.

“Believe in yourself, put God first in everything that you do, aim high, not low, the sky is not even your limit as you succeed in life.” He said.

Given the breakdown of the graduating list, he said ” Undergraduates 1047, Post Graduates 184, Diplomas 49 Total 1280, first class honours, 25, Second Class (Upper Division) 362, Second Class(Lower Division) 566, Third Class 94

The Kwara State governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Mamman Saba Jibri urged the students not to abuse the certificate given to them as the University has the mandate to withdraw their certificate

He urged them to imbibe the moral values which the University has inculcate in them and be good ambassadors to the University.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria. Alhaja Sekinat O Yusuf said the current governing council would continue to support the management in the quest towards raising the bar of academic excellence for the University.

“We shall also ensure transparency, accountability and diligence in the conduct of the affairs of the University by the Management.

Also speaking on the current state of tertiary education in Nigeria, she decried the low quality of graduates, under-funding, disruption of academic calendar due majorly to strike by labour unions (in public-owned tertiary institutions)

She stressed the need of all stakeholders including parents, proprietors, professionals as well as government at all levels in addressing the challenges.

” We all need to go back to the drawing board to proffer lasting solution to the current state of affairs in tertiary education in Nigeria.

“This efforts should also include the involvement of the committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigeria Universities. The experience from their own jurisdiction can be of immense value in providing lasting solution to the recurring challenges” she said.

She urged the graduands to be good ambassador to the University and remember their alma mata

The Chancellor of the University Alhaji Sayyu Dantata, who also spoke on the growth of the University said ” We have witnessed the involvement of a fast-growing Institution over the last 17 years from three faculties in 2005 with 70 students, the University now has seven faculties with over 5,000 students.

He urged the graduands to play their parts in shaping the country for a better future.


Three eminent personalities awarded Honoris Causa degrees – Mr Fola Adeola, FCA, mni, bags Doctor of Business Administration; Mrs Mosun Belo-Olusoga bags Doctor of Accounting; and Mrs Foluke K. AbdulRazaq, Doctor of Finance.
