“My son is at the World Cup” – Nigerian mum celebrates as her son Samuel Ayomide Adekugbe makes World Cup debut for Canada

The biggest football tournament in the world is currently going on in Qatar, and it has been a beautiful event, living up to its expectations. While the experience is not new for some players, some people are playing for the first time and a Nigerian mum celebrated when she saw her son on the pitch making his debut.

Nigeria didn’t qualify for the tournament, but we’ve seen a good number of Nigerian-born footballers playing for other countries in Qatar, and one of them is Samuel Ayomide Adekugbe.

The 27-year-old defender was born to Nigerian parents in England, but the family relocated to Canada at the age of 10.

He was eligible to represent Nigeria, England, and Canada, but he chose Canada in 2013 and helped them qualify for the world cup for the first time in decades.

In the 74th minute of their impressive opener against Belgium, coach John Herdman brought him on for Richie Laryea.

His mum was watching and in the recorded video, she celebrated and said “My son is in the World Cup, yeah baby! Thank you, Jesus, Thank you, Jesus, Hallelujah!”

The proud mum, who is also a pastor, posted the video on her Instagram page and many people joined her in celebrating.
