INEC To Impose Fine On parties Who Engage In Hate Speech During Campaign

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), says it will impose N1million fine on any political party and media house which engages in hate speech during 2023 campaign.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Garba Attahiru, made this known on Thursday during the meeting with the stakeholders in Ilorin.

Attahiru said that the use of abusive language or hate speech was not allowed, adding that anybody found wanting would be made to pay a fine of N1million and subsequently N2million.

He said that any politician that embarks on campaign before Sept. 28 would be fined N500,000, asserting that campaign in every election ends 24hours to poll.

The INEC boss added that the political parties shall forward notice to the commission on the schedule of campaign, stating the time, venue, date, agenda and lists of members of the organizing committee within a minimum period not less than 7 days to the commencement of activities.

He stressed that the campaigns shall be in compliance with all extant laws, regulations and code-including code of conduct for political parties etc.

The REC explained that where there is conflict in the date, venue or timing of the activities of different political parties, their representatives shall meet in the presence of the Nigeria Police Force to resolve the issues amicably without recourse nor intimidation, force or violence.

He added that the political campaign shall aim at canvassing for votes in favour of apolitical party and candidate and no more.

The REC urged all political parties not to campaign in religious centre, police station and public institutions.

Attahiru added the code of conduct forbid the use of violence, threat, physical force or coercion by organized groups or individual.

Alhaja Limota Goroso, the Executive Director International Women Communication Center (IWCC), called on women to come out in large numbers to vote for candidate of their choice, who we take Nigeria to the greater height.

She urged kwara INEC to emulate Osun INEC to ensure peaceful election.

She advised INEC to create separate line for pregnant women, aged and people with disability to ensure quick voting. (NAN)
