KWASU secures MDCN nod for preclinical medical programme, students set for clinical training

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has recorded a major milestone in its quest to strengthen medical education following the approval of its preclinical programme by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

The development, which paves the way for the institution’s medical students to advance in their studies, was announced during an exit briefing at the KWASU Business School in Ilorin on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

Leader of the MDCN accreditation team and Deputy Registrar, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakama, said the approval followed a comprehensive assessment of facilities, personnel and institutional readiness.

He commended the strong collaboration between KWASU and the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital, describing it as a critical factor in the success of the exercise.

He, however, stressed that sustaining the accreditation would require continuous investment, noting that medical education is both capital and human resource intensive.

“The programme demands sustained commitment in terms of infrastructure, manpower and funding to maintain standards and ensure growth,” Nwakama said.

Reacting to the development, the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, conveyed the appreciation of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, describing the accreditation as a validation of ongoing efforts to reposition the state’s health and education sectors.

She noted that the MDCN’s role remains vital in safeguarding the integrity of the medical profession while promoting quality training across institutions.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor of KWASU, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the exercise, praising the thoroughness of the accreditation process.

“We are delighted with this achievement. We will continue to work on all identified areas to further strengthen our medical programme,” he said.

With the accreditation, 300-level medical students of KWASU are now eligible to proceed to their clinical training phase after sitting for their first professional examination, marking a significant step forward for the university’s College of Health Sciences.
