Unity, Discipline Key to Nigeria’s Security Challenges – Army Tells Troops in Ilorin

The Nigerian Army has stressed that unity and collective discipline remain critical to overcoming the nation’s security and developmental challenges, describing togetherness as a practical tool rather than a mere slogan.
The Acting Commandant of the Nigerian Army Institute of Science Education and Technology (NAISET), Colonel Abbas Abubakar, made this known recently during the 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) held at the Sobi Barracks, Ilorin, Kwara State.
Colonel Abubakar said the annual WASA celebration provides an opportunity for the Army to review its achievements over the year while strengthening bonds of unity, brotherhood and discipline among officers and soldiers.
According to him, unity within the Nigerian Army has consistently enabled the institution to surmount operational and institutional challenges, remain focused on its mandate and sustain excellence.
“Unity in the Nigerian Army is not just a concept; it is a daily practice that helps us overcome challenges, achieve our goals and remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence,” he said.
He described WASA as a cherished tradition that brings personnel together as one family, promotes cultural understanding and offers a moment to reflect on institutional achievements.
The acting commandant noted that cultural performances by staff and students of NAISET reflected Nigeria’s rich ethnic diversity, adding that the display underscored the importance of cooperation despite differences.
“Our strength as a nation lies in our ability to work together, irrespective of our backgrounds. Our achievements in academics, technology and military proficiency go beyond operations to celebrate camaraderie, family and cultural diversity,” Abubakar stated.
He urged officers and soldiers to use the celebration as a reminder to recommit themselves to unity, discipline and patriotism in the discharge of their duties.
In his remarks, Kwara State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, commended the Nigerian Army for its sustained efforts in addressing security challenges affecting lives and livelihoods in the state.
The governor, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Security, Mr Muyideen Aliyu, praised the bravery and determination of Army personnel, noting that their operations have significantly improved peace and order in Kwara.
“It is evident that your hard work is making a tangible difference in our state. Your operations have curtailed the activities of those who seek to destroy our way of life,” he said.
Abdulrazaq congratulated the Army on the successful hosting of the 2025 WASA and urged officers and soldiers to remain hardworking, loyal, disciplined and dedicated to their responsibilities.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Nigerian Army through continued support and collaboration.
The West African Social Activities is an annual Nigerian Army event that celebrates the country’s diverse cultural heritage and marks the end of the year’s activities.
The 2025 edition, hosted by NAISET and the Nigerian Army College of Education, featured award presentations to outstanding officers, beating of the retreat, lighting of the bonfire, cultural displays, acrobatic dances and choreographed performances, with officers, soldiers and their families in attendance.
