Firefighters Avert Disaster as Blaze Guts Mouka Foam Depot in Ilorin

Prompt intervention by the Kwara State Fire Service on Wednesday evening prevented what could have been a major disaster after a fire broke out at the Mouka Foam distribution depot in the Asa Dam area of Ilorin.

The incident occurred around 5:56pm at the depot located beside Asa Dam Hospital. The affected facility is a storey building with an extension at the rear used as a warehouse for foam mattresses.

According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the fire had already spread to two neighbouring buildings before firefighters were alerted, raising serious concerns about the safety of residents and nearby commercial properties.

Speaking on the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Chief Fire Superintendent Alabi Muhammed, said the situation was swiftly brought under control due to the professionalism and timely response of the fire crew.

“Our men arrived at the scene and immediately engaged the fire aggressively. Their prompt action helped to contain the inferno and stop it from spreading further to surrounding structures,” Alabi said.

He personally led the firefighting operation, coordinating efforts to ensure the blaze was fully extinguished and the area secured.

While no casualties were reported, the Director disclosed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Alabi used the opportunity to caution warehouse operators and distributors, especially those dealing in foam products, to adhere strictly to fire safety regulations.

“Foam mattresses are made from petrochemical materials which are highly inflammable. Once ignited, they spread fire rapidly. Operators must ensure adequate spacing, proper ventilation and the installation of functional firefighting equipment in their facilities,” he warned.

The statement on the incident was issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Service, PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, on behalf of the Director.

The Kwara State Fire Service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state, urging residents to promptly report fire outbreaks to enable quick emergency response.
