Union Betrayal Must End: Kwara Teachers Issue 72-hour Deadline for NUT Leadership
Following our earlier rebuttal to the press statement issued by the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State Wing, we, the collective teachers of Kwara State, hereby issue this firm and final follow-up statement in the interest of clarity, accountability, and justice.
We state without ambiguity that the recent threats issued by the Kwara NUT leadership against its own members are not only irresponsible and provocative but represent a total collapse of union ethics and purpose.
A union that should protect teachers has instead chosen intimidation, blame-shifting, and open hostility toward the very people it claims to represent despite its glaring failure to secure teachers’ legitimate demands over the years.
Accordingly, we give the leadership of the Kwara State NUT a clear 72-hour ultimatum, effective immediately, to:
1. Unequivocally tender a public apology** to the thousands of Kwara teachers for issuing threats, attempting to suppress lawful agitation, and disrespecting the collective will of its members.
2. Formally and publicly withdraw the earlier press statement** issued against teachers, which remains an insult to the profession and a stain on union integrity.
Furthermore, beyond apology and withdrawal, we also give the union leadership 72 hours to:
3. Openly address all teachers in Kwara State, without intermediaries, propaganda, or intimidation; and
4. Clearly announce a definite date** which must fall on or before 2nd January for a transparent engagement with teachers on all outstanding demands, including but not limited to allowances, palliatives, welfare, and genuine representation.
Let it be clearly understood:
This ultimatum is not a threat; it is a final call for responsibility. Teachers have exercised restraint, patience, and professionalism for far too long. That restraint is now exhausted.
Failure to fully comply with these demands within the stipulated 72 hours will leave the teachers of Kwara State with no other option than to activate a total, collective response.
Such failure will compel the union leadership to witness what can only be described as the mother of all protests a lawful, massive, and teacher-driven uprising that will reverberate across the state and beyond.
The dignity of the teaching profession is non-negotiable.
Silence in the face of betrayal is no longer an option.
*We are organized.
*We are united.
*And we are resolute.
