The Vice-Chancellor, took the students through the history of Al-Hikmah University, explaining how the institution was founded.
He stated that the University received its license on 5th of January 2005 as the first Islamic faith-based university in Nigeria, beginning with just 70 students and three faculties. According to him, the University has since grown to over 10,000 students, nine faculties and about 600 members of staff.
He reminded the students that being admitted into Al-Hikmah comes with the responsibility of good conduct, and urged them to be of good behaviour at all times.
He concluded by praying that Allah grants the students a successful stay in the University and a successful exit upon completion of their studies.
The Registrar, Dr. Kazeem Oladimeji, while delivering his welcome address, expressed his delight in formally welcoming the new students into the University.
He described the day as an important milestone in their academic journey and congratulated them for being privileged to gain admission out of the many applicants who applied to the institution.
Dr. Oladimeji said that university life gives students more freedom and responsibility, and reminded the students that they are the architects of their own time and success.
He, therefore, advised the students to strictly abide by the rules and regulations of the University, especially on issues such as proper dressing in line with Islamic standards, zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice and other acts of misconduct.
Earlier in his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Afeez Lawal, welcomed the new students into the University and explained that the orientation programme was designed to help them understand the system and navigate their academic journey.
He advised them to remain focused and warned them against allowing electronic devices and other distractions to divert their attention from their primary purpose of being in the University.
Director of Sports, Dr. Jamiu Dosunmu, who spoke on the topic “Fear Allah Wherever You Are,” reminded the students that the awareness that Almighty Allah sees, hears and knows everything should guide their actions at all times.

He explained that the freedom enjoyed in the University is a serious test and should not be abused, noting that everyone would be accountable for how they use their time.
According to him, although there are temptations within the university environment, the fear of Allah makes it possible to overcome them.
He stressed that whoever fears Allah would always find a way out and receive provision from unexpected sources.
Dr. Dosunmu urged the students to make the fear of Allah their watchword and to associate with people of good character, regardless of their background, religion or ethnicity.
Speaking on drug abuse, the State Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs. Fatima Abiola, revealed that about 14.3 million people in Nigeria are drug users, with young people making up the majority of the figure, adding that one out of every four users is female. She cautioned students to stay away from drug use, especially psychotropic substances which affect the brain.
Mrs. Abiola also advised the new students to be careful about accepting drinks or edibles from strangers. She encouraged them to report any suspected case of drug abuse to the appropriate authorities within the University and warned against covering up such issues in the name of student solidarity, noting that drug abuse is a major obstacle to achieving life goals.
The Director of Academic Planning, Dr. Abdulrauf Tosho advised the students to build a strong relationship with their Level Advisers, describing them as personal academic navigators.
He explained that Level Advisers play a very important role throughout a student’s academic journey, as they help to monitor academic progress, offer guidance, speak on behalf of students when necessary, and provide support during challenging periods.
Also speaking, Dr. Saidat Onikosi-Aliu urged the students to always write down their goals and reminded them that he who fails to plan, plans to fail.

She encouraged the students to search within themselves and clearly define what they want to achieve and how they intend to achieve it.
According to her, penning down goals creates room for growth and helps students stay focused throughout their time in the University.
