KWASU Advocates Sustainable Tourism as Key to Nigeria’s Future

Kwara State University, Malete (KWASU) has emphasised that sustainable tourism holds the key to unlocking Nigeria’s economic growth, cultural preservation, and community empowerment.

Speaking during the institution’s commemoration of the 2025 World Tourism Day at the KWASU International Conference Centre, Ilorin, Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh described tourism as “a powerful engine for economic growth, cultural exchange, and social integration.”

He noted that the year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” calls for a balance between development and environmental preservation.

“Nigeria, and indeed our continent, is richly endowed with cultural and natural heritage such as festivals, natural attractions, and hospitality resources. Yet, for these treasures to yield enduring value, they must be nurtured responsibly,” Professor Jimoh said.

He added that sustainable transformation requires eco-friendly infrastructure, responsible travel policies, and strong partnerships across government, industries, and academia.

“Through research, training, and innovation, we are equipping the next generation of professionals to reimagine tourism and hospitality as tools that create jobs, empower communities, and safeguard our heritage for generations to come,” he stressed.

Delivering the keynote address, CEO of Peace Hotel and Suites, Dr. Samuel Akinlaja, represented by Dr. Kamal, highlighted Africa’s potential in linking agriculture to eco-tourism and turning waste into wealth. He said prioritising communities, protecting nature, celebrating authentic cultures, and promoting youth-driven innovation were pathways to sustainability.

In her welcome address, Head of Department of Tourism and Hospitality, Dr. Modupeola Falabi, described sustainable tourism as a foundation for development.

“Our task is to build capacity, conduct research, and nurture professionals who will pioneer these transformations. By linking theory with practice, we prepare our students not only to participate in the industry but to shape its direction in alignment with sustainability goals,” she said.

The celebration featured performances by the Kwara State Council for Arts and Culture and the Balaro Drummers. Staff and students of the department had earlier embarked on a road trip to notable tourist sites in Ilorin.
