FG Warns Contractors, Sets June 2026 Deadline for Abuja–Lokoja, Abuja–Kaduna–Kano Highways

The Federal Government has issued a stern ultimatum to contractors handling the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano and Abuja–Lokoja highways, insisting that both projects must be completed by June 2026.

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, who led an inspection team to Obajana Junction in Kogi State, expressed frustration over what he described as poor commitment by some contractors despite the huge mobilisation funds already disbursed.

He revealed that one contractor had completed just three kilometres out of a 400-kilometre stretch in two years, while others have done less than 20 percent of their assignments. According to him, such negligence will no longer be tolerated.

“Any contractor that fails to meet our deadlines will face consequences. We will not hesitate to involve the EFCC and ICPC to probe those who collected funds without performance. This administration is determined to deliver results,” Umahi said.

On the 262-kilometre Abuja–Kaduna–Kano highway, the minister directed that Sections 1 and 3, totaling 118 kilometres, as well as Section 2, must be completed within the next 14 months. Section 2 alone, awarded at N507 billion, involves reinforced concrete pavement and flexible asphalt on certain portions.

For the 230-kilometre Abuja–Lokoja project, Umahi commended the quality of work on Section 3 handled by Trucrete Solutions Limited but condemned its slow pace, warning that the contract would be revoked if delivery is not achieved by April 2026.

He also announced a change in payment methods, saying contractors would henceforth be paid only after verifiable milestones, not just on certificates.

While acknowledging that rising costs — such as cement now at N9,500 per bag — pose challenges, Umahi stressed that inflation is no excuse for abandonment or delay.

“The Tinubu administration is committed to providing durable roads that can last up to 100 years. Improved road networks will not only drive economic growth but also enhance security across the country,” he assured.

The minister, accompanied by his State counterpart Bello Goronyo and other top officials, urged contractors to increase manpower and equipment on site, warning that government will only keep firms that match its vision for modern infrastructure.
