By Aderogba George
Dr Patrick Ezie, Chief Executive Officer of Silver-Cross Hospitals and Foundation in Abuja, said the Safe Motherhood Project was inaugurated to support indigent pregnant women with free maternal healthcare.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, Ezie said the initiative, inaugurated in January 2024, had so far assisted more than 150 pregnant women who could not afford essential maternal services.
“If a woman comes in and she is indigent, we provide antenatal services, tests, and medications free of charge.
“If she requires surgery, including a caesarean section, we also perform that at no cost,” he said.
Ezie also revealed that the hospital ran a partnership with Global Health Promise; an international NGO focused on pregnant female sex workers.
He said under the collaboration, female sex workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) received full maternal care at no cost, including caesarean sections and incubator support for preterm babies.
In addition to the Safe Motherhood Project, Ezie said Silver-Cross Hospital conducted a wide range of community health outreaches and collaborated with other organisations in the treatment of childhood cancer.
“One of the core mandates of Silver-Cross Hospitals is to ensure access to universal healthcare
“As part of its special projects this year, the hospital also provided free breast cancer surgeries to more than 50 women across Nigeria, he added. (NAN)
