KWASU Highlights Steps to Tackle Malete Insecurity, Dismisses Allegations of Silence
Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has rejected claims circulating on social media alleging government silence over recent security incidents involving students living off-campus, describing the narrative as false and misleading.
The university was reacting to a statement by a writer, Wahab Oba, who accused the state government and KWASU management of “deafening silence” over recent robbery attacks on students in private hostels around Malete.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director, Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, on July 8, 2025, the university insisted that the claims were aimed at discrediting ongoing efforts to restore safety in the community.
“This write-up is one bent on destruction rather than construction,” Dr. Aliyu stated. “Some of the perpetrators of the attacks are already in police custody, while efforts to arrest others still at large are in full gear.”
She further noted that collaborative security measures have been intensified, involving the university, the Kwara State Government, Moro Local Government, the Ministry of Tertiary Education, and various security agencies.
Part of the security overhaul, according to the university, includes the formation of a joint security committee comprising university staff, student representatives, security agents, and members of the Malete community.
The committee is actively working to ensure that private hostel operators engage competent security personnel and employ professional vigilantes to bolster safety.
Dr. Aliyu also disclosed that a bylaw is being formalized at the local government level to legally back restrictions on movement within the community during specific hours to enhance security surveillance.
“The Nigeria Police has increased its personnel in Malete, while the NSCDC has also intensified its patrols. Vigilantes have been recruited and equipped with appropriate gadgets to support the existing security structure,” she added.
She praised the role of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, noting that he has been central to the state’s response. “To claim that nothing is being done is a disservice to the efforts of the governor, the university management, and the people of Malete,” she said.
The university has urged the public to disregard Wahab Oba’s commentary, describing it as “mischief” that undermines sincere efforts to protect students.
“Quoting past events and presenting them as if no action has been taken is clearly an attempt to mislead the public and damage the integrity of those working hard to address the situation,” Dr. Aliyu concluded.
