Tinubu Heads to Saint Lucia, Brazil to Boost Nigeria-Caribbean, BRICS Ties

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to depart Abuja on Saturday, June 28, 2025, for a strategic diplomatic tour of Saint Lucia and Brazil, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s global partnerships, especially with nations in the Caribbean and BRICS economic bloc.

In his first port of call, President Tinubu will pay a state visit to Saint Lucia as part of Nigeria’s renewed push to deepen South-South cooperation and expand its engagement with Caribbean nations.

During the visit, Tinubu is expected to meet with Saint Lucia’s Governor-General, Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles, and Prime Minister Philip Pierre.

A major highlight of the engagement will be his address to a special joint session of the Saint Lucian Parliament, to be held at the William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom, Sandals Grande, Gros Islet.

The event will bring together heads of government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), top Saint Lucian officials, diplomats, Nigerian nationals, and the OECS Director-General, Dr Didacus Jules.

Following his parliamentary address, Tinubu will attend a high-level working luncheon with OECS leaders, where discussions will centre on enhancing economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and shared prosperity between Nigeria and the Eastern Caribbean region.

“This visit is a clear signal of Nigeria’s readiness to build lasting partnerships with the Caribbean in education, trade, and development,” a senior Nigerian foreign affairs official noted. “The aim is to create opportunities that benefit both regions.”

The President is also scheduled to visit Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in Castries to promote academic collaboration and exchange programmes with Nigerian institutions.

President Tinubu’s visit reflects Nigeria’s growing commitment to engaging with the African diaspora, recognised as the ‘Sixth Region’ of the African Union, to promote mutual development and unity.

After his engagements in Saint Lucia, Tinubu will proceed to Brazil to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where leaders from key emerging economies are expected to chart a new course for multilateral cooperation and global economic reform.

The diplomatic tour, which underscores Nigeria’s foreign policy thrust under Tinubu’s administration, aims to position the country as a bridge between Africa, the diaspora, and major global alliances.
