Swift Response by Kwara Firefighters Saves Building from Devastating Inferno in Ganmo
A major fire outbreak at a residential and commercial complex in Ganmo, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State was brought under control in the early hours of Saturday, June 21, 2025, thanks to the timely intervention of the Kwara State Fire Service.
The incident, which occurred around 6:20 a.m. at God First Plaza—located opposite the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Ogbondoroko Road—sent residents and shop owners into panic as flames engulfed the one-storey structure housing ten two-bedroom flats and ten shops.
According to the Head of Media and Publicity for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, firemen responded swiftly following a distress call and arrived to find the entire building threatened by the blaze.
“Our officers acted without hesitation. Despite the intensity of the fire and a sudden explosion caused by shattering glass, they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures,” he said.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion forced some occupants to abandon their belongings and flee, but fortunately, no casualties were reported.
A preliminary investigation by the fire service indicated that the fire was caused by a power surge in one of the flats, which contained highly combustible materials, accelerating the flames.
Only one flat was reported to have been significantly damaged, a testament to the professionalism of the fire crew.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, who expressed sympathy with those affected, used the opportunity to remind the public of the importance of fire safety.
“Fire doesn’t give warnings. We must all take preventive measures seriously—especially when it comes to managing electrical appliances and avoiding storage of flammable items in residential buildings,” he advised.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any electrical irregularities to avoid similar incidents.
