Omu-Aran Mayhem: Police Arrest Five, Hoodlums Vandalise Property, Free Suspected Criminal
Tension gripped Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State following a string of violent incidents involving suspected hoodlums who attacked security operatives and vandalized public and private properties.
According to a statement from the Kwara State Police Command, the unrest began on May 25, 2025, when operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad arrested a notorious suspect identified as Azeez, also known as “A-Z”, believed to be involved in drug peddling and arms trafficking. The arrest was made around 4:00 pm following credible intelligence.
However, while the suspect was being transported to the police station, a mob of angry youths intercepted the police team and forcefully freed him.
“In line with safety protocols, our officers tactically disengaged and returned to base to reassess the threat,” said the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, who issued the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
Barely 30 minutes later, the same group reportedly attempted to invade the police station. Their efforts were repelled by the officers on duty. The group later moved to the Olomu’s Palace where they set a motorcycle belonging to the monarch’s police orderly ablaze.
The violence continued into the following day. On May 26 at about 2:00 pm, a faction of the same group attacked the Olomu Aperan Microfinance Bank. Armed with stones and other dangerous weapons, they vandalized the bank’s CCTV cameras, signboard, and extensively damaged three vehicles within the premises.
Police reinforcements arrived at the scene, prompting the attackers to flee. Five suspects were arrested in connection with the bank attack, while bank staff were safely escorted to the police station.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, has ordered intensified patrols and surveillance across the area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
“We are calling on residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement officers. Investigations are ongoing, and anyone found inciting violence or spreading false information will face the full weight of the law,” the PPRO stated.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while urging the public to shun acts that could endanger community peace.
