Kwara Govt Restores Accreditation of Hospital Pharmacy Departments After 20 Years

Gov AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State

The Kwara State Government has successfully restored the accreditation of pharmacy departments in state-owned hospitals, allowing them to resume the training of intern pharmacists after losing the status over two decades ago.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had last year approved and fully supported the initiative by the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board to seek re-accreditation from the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN). As a result, no fewer than seven state hospitals have now been accredited as internship training centers for graduate pharmacists.

The accredited facilities include:

General Hospital Patigi
General Hospital Offa
Kwara State University Teaching Hospital, Ilorin,  Civil Service Hospital
Aisha Buhari Mother & Child Hospital
Sobi Specialist Hospital Children’s Specialist Hospital Kwara State Essential Drugs Project
The Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Abdulraheem Malik, described the development as a major milestone for the state’s healthcare sector.

“It was a long and tedious process that involved the PCN sending an accreditation team to Kwara State to inspect the proposed facilities. We are very happy we succeeded, and Kwara State can now resume the training of intern pharmacists from all schools of pharmacy in Nigeria—an opportunity lost two decades ago,” he stated.

Dr. Malik emphasized that due diligence was observed throughout the accreditation process, with all facilities required to meet strict preconditions before receiving approval.

He further assured that the Board would continue to supervise and monitor the accredited facilities to ensure sustained improvements in healthcare service delivery across the state.

Additionally, he revealed that the process has begun to secure accreditation for the training of intern nurses and medical laboratory scientists, further strengthening the state’s healthcare workforce.
