NGO calls for amendment to NGO Regulatory Bill before passage
A Non-Governmental Organisation, Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI) has called for the amendment to the provisions of the NGO Regulatory Bill presently at the Senate before its passage into law.
The organisation spoke through the Team Lead of Kwara South Ambassadors, Mr Rasheed Kadri during its sensitisation visit to Oro in Irepodun Local Government area of Kwara.
Mr Kadri said the bill if passed into law with it’s present provision would restrict and limit the operations of NGOs more than the normal regulation it was to do.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NGO Regulatory Bill is presently in the House Committee stage after passing the first and second reading at the Senate.
The Bill among other things seeks for the establishment of a NGO Regulatory Commission that would over see the affairs of NGOs and re-register them after the initial registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
Through the new registration, the commission will have the sole power to license all NGOs, which means no NGO can operate without it.
Mr Kadri said the NGO plays complimentary roles to governmental efforts in growth and development of the society, which would not be attainable with the new bill.
He added that having a new commission would amount to extra cost for the government at a time that the country was considering merging organisations to cut down cost of governance.
The team lead said it was important for the community members to lend their voices to stop the passage of the bill into law as it is because, it will impede the developments and provision of amenities the community gets through NGOs.
In her lecture on gender justice, Miss Ayomitide Ebo advised parents to ensure they give equal rights and opportunities to both the boy and the girl child.
She said it was imperative to allow children develop generally and not assign roles or importance according to their gender.
Mr David Ashaolu in his presentation on Digital Rights enlightened the community members on the need to uphold ther digital privacy but always respect the rights of others on the digital space.
He advised against giving out sensitive data like PIN or password to outsiders to avoid falling prey of scammers.
Mr Abdulraheem Abdulsalam, who responded on behalf of members of the community commended the group for the initiative to educate members of the community.
He pledged the support of the community to the NGO whenever it is needed as they have always served as opener for them. (NAN)
