Dr Yusuf Suberu, FCT Squadron Leader, Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) ,mayors of the federation, said this in a statement he issued in Abuja.

VIO mayors are volunteers who assist professional traffic managers in the 36 states and FCT to ease gridlock and traffic challenges through an expanded volunteerism approach.

Suberu advised motorists to exercise extreme caution and adhere to safety guidelines while traveling, emphasising that the roads would be congested and the risk of accidents would be higher.

He said “as we approach the Christmas celebration, we urge motorists to be cautious and avoid reckless driving.

“The roads will be congested, and the risk of accidents will be higher. We advise motorists to plan their journeys carefully, avoid night travels, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition,” he said.

Suberu, however, emphasised the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, saying, “before embarking on any journey, ensure your vehicle is roadworthy.

“Check your tires, brakes, and lights to avoid any mechanical failure that could lead to accidents. It is better to be safe than sorry,”he added.

The VIO mayor warned against overloading and speeding, adding that they were the major causes of Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) on the Nigeria highways

Suberu urged motorists to avoid those practices and drive defensively to ensure their safety and the safety of other road users.

“Remember, the lives of your passengers and other road users are in your hands,”he maintained.

Suberu, however, assured that the mayors would be working closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a safe and smooth flow of traffic during the festive period.

He appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and adhere to safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christmas celebration.

“We urge motorists to be patient, courteous, and cooperative with traffic officials. Let us work together to ensure a safe and accident-free Christmas celebration. Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
