Ph.D Holder Urges Nigerian Government to Declare State of Emergency on Education

A newly conferred Ph.D holder in Business Administration, Dr. Shina Amoo (MNSE), has called on the federal government, state governors, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to declare a state of emergency in Nigeria’s education sector.

Dr. Amoo, who received his doctorate during the convocation ceremony of Lead City University in Ibadan, Oyo State, emphasized the need for strategic reforms to enhance the quality of education across the country.

He advocated for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into educational institutions, while cautioning against excessive reliance on AI to avoid making students lazy or mentally redundant.

“The educational sector should be improved upon. A state of emergency should be declared in the sector. If you look around, many parents are sending their children abroad for secondary or tertiary education, which does not significantly contribute to national development,” he stated.

Dr. Amoo, who also serves as the CEO of Mania Petroleum Marketing Company Limited, urged the government and education administrators to prioritize skill development and entrepreneurship training in the curriculum.

He noted that such measures would address graduate unemployment, fostering self-reliance and creating job creators rather than job seekers.

He further lamented the poor welfare of teachers and lecturers, highlighting the disparity between their earnings and those of politicians. “Teachers are demotivated. When a politician with an OND or HND earns millions while a teacher takes home less than N200,000, what motivation do you expect? Many teachers don’t read or research anymore because there’s no incentive to do so,” he added.

Dr. Amoo also called for measures to regulate the use of AI in education, ensuring it complements learning rather than replacing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

“We need our children to understand the rudiments of Mathematics and other subjects. AI should be integrated into the education system in a way that enhances learning without promoting laziness or academic shortcuts,” he said.

Expressing gratitude for achieving his academic milestone, Dr. Amoo revealed his aspiration to become an associate professor to impart knowledge and mold future leaders. “This Ph.D is a dream fulfilled. My goal is to deliver knowledge to the youth and contribute to their development as useful citizens of this country,” he remarked.

Dr. Amoo’s call for reforms underscores the urgent need for a holistic approach to revitalizing Nigeria’s education system, addressing challenges from teacher welfare to technological adoption.
