YOWICAN Partners with Leah Medical Centre for Free Cancer Screening in Kwara
The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Kwara Chapter, in collaboration with Leah Medical Centre, has provided free breast and cervical cancer testing for over 100 women across the state.
The testing, which took place in Ilorin on Saturday, was part of activities marking the Annual YOWICAN State Convention and the World Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Speaking at the event, YOWICAN Chairman, Bro. Stephen Awoyale, emphasized the importance of health awareness, especially among Christian youths.
He noted that many young people often neglect their health, prompting the need for the medical outreach.
“We discovered that a lot of youths have issues with their health and we thought it wise to do something about it, especially among our women, both young and old,” Awoyale said.
“If we ask some of them to go to the hospital, they become reluctant, either because of money or personal reasons, so we have brought it to their doorstep for free, and we are believing God that it will be beneficial to everyone here today.”
In addition to cancer testing, participants also had their blood pressure, blood sugar, and other essential health checks conducted.
A nurse from Leah Medical Centre, Olusola Timilehin, highlighted the significance of early detection, particularly during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“We have seen people who fought cancer and survived, just because it was discovered early enough, through tests and free interventions like this,” she said.
Miss Balogun Morenike, one of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude for the timely exercise.
“I am happy to be able to do this, because going to the hospital, I may have to pay for it, but it has been brought to us for free, and for which I’m grateful,” she said.
Another participant, Mr. Moyo Abolarin, applauded the organisers, describing the initiative as a “big philanthropic exercise” that would help prevent unnecessary deaths by encouraging people to manage their health proactively.
More than a hundred men, women, and youths attended the outreach, benefitting from the various free medical services offered.
