Gov. Mohammed swears in 20 LGA Chairmen
Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state has sworn in the 20 newly elected Executive Local Government Chairmen at the state Government House.
It could be recalled that Mr Ahmed Makama, the Chairman of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC), on Saturday, announced that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
won all the 20 chairmanship seats in the Local Government election conducted on Saturday.
Makama, who stated that the election was conducted peacefully across the state, added that other parties emerged victorious in the councilorship as the results were declared in the wards.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony, Gov. Bala Mohammed congratulated them for emerging victorious at their various LGAs.
He said that his administration believed that the people should have a say in the local government administration through an elected council comprising Chairmen and Councilors.
“This is more so now that the local governments have been granted autonomy by the Supreme Court to run their affairs.
“It is for this reason that our party, the PDP nominated and presented knowledgeable, experienced and competent candidates buying for both Chairmanships and councilorships during the election.
“With the victory of our candidates, I’m confident that we will have the desired leadership to effectively administer our local governments as autonomous third tier of government,” he said
Mohammed further called on the elected Chairmen to cooperate with the state government and work together to serve the people of the state better.
Speaking on behalf of other LG Chairmen, Mahmood Baba-Maji, the Bauchi Local Government Chairman, expressed gratitude to the state governor for the trust reposed in them.
He promised that they would leave no stone unturned to justify the confidence reposed in them.
“We will serve our various local governments diligently and we assure you that all your policies and programmes will be replicated in our various local governments.
The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Rabi Umar, administered the oath of allegiance and office to the 20 newly elected Chairmen.
The local government election was conducted following the recent judgment of the Supreme Court, which affirmed local government’s autonomy,
The judgment is seeking the Federation Account Allocation Committee to withhold funds meant for LGs without democratically elected officials.
