We’re not part of any protest – Bauchi NLC
By Idris Ayinde
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Bauchi state on Thursday, distanced itself from the planned nation wide protest slated for Aug. 1.
Comrade Dauda Shaibu, the NLC Chairman in the state, stated this in a news conference in Bauchi.
According to him, the protest was being organized by “coalition of civil society organisations in Nigeria”, adding that the organised labour is an organization constituted by law and has no affiliation with any civil society organisation.
“I want to inform you that organised labour is an organization constituted by law and these civil society organizations are not in any way an affiliate of NLC neither is NLC an affiliate of any civil society organisation.
“I want to make it categorically clear that the National Labour jointly met, discussed and resolved that the organised labour are not going to be a party to this protest.
“Whenever the organised labour intend to embark on a protest, there is a way in a decorum manner that the protest will be organised in such a way that injury would not be meted on either citizens nor the security forces.
“We also met in the state, discussed and resolved that in Bauchi, the NLC and the TUC, based on the directives we received from the national Secretariat, we are not going to be a party to this protest,” he said.
Shaibu, who explained that the organised labour was much aware that people and workers were going through hardships, said that if time permits, whenever the union intended to embark on any protest, it would do so not at the directives of any civil society organisation.
He called on all workers in the state to be law-abiding citizens, remain at their places of work or anywhere they would be on the protest day but should not be part of it.
