NLC Condemns Electricity Tariff Hike, Demands Immediate Reversal
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the recent hike in electricity tariff by Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs), describing it as “impunity and arrogance” that will further harm the economy and citizens.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed dismay over the hike, which came despite assurances from the National Assembly and other relevant quarters that the matter would be addressed.
The hike, which took effect on July 1, saw tariffs increase from N206.80 to N209.50 for “Band A” customers.
Ajaero argued that the hike would lead to more businesses shutting down and increased difficulties for consumers, citing the unresolved issues surrounding the previous 250% tariff hike that sparked national protests and led to the shutdown of over 300 businesses.
The NLC demanded an immediate reversal of the hike, criticizing the government and DISCOs for their “insincerity and insensitivity” and for “killing the people and the economy.”
Ajaero also accused the government and energy sector entities of failing to address the root causes of the energy crisis, instead treating only the symptoms.
