The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, says that the force is set to launch the establishment of a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) to respond to all forms of crises in Bauchi state.
The IGP said this in Bauchi on Wednesday when he paid a courtesy visit to Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state.
Egbetokun, said he would establish the squad in all the states of the federation, adding that 10 states had been selected as pilot states and Bauchi state was one of them.
According to him, by the time the squad fully takes off, the days of the bandits and other criminals terrorising the country will be numbered.
He explained that members of this squad would be carefully selected, specially trained, equipped and specially motivated.
The IGP added that the squad would not engage in routine anti-crime patrol, but they would be based, housed, fed, taken care of and trained.
“It’s either they are on an intervention mission, or they are in their base training.
“Their mission will be to respond to all crises. If there is any crisis anywhere, this squad will be deployed to intervene in those crises and return to base to continue training.
“From our experience, we found out that if we face a particular state that is troubled by bandits, as we are chasing them away from that state, they are moving into neighbouring states.
“And if you go to that state, they will still move to another state, and we want to stop this. If we have the squad in all the states, as we are chasing them out from a place, they will not have another place to run to.
“Bauchi state is a peaceful state, but we don’t want the peace of the state to be broken in any way, therefore, Bauchi state has been selected as one of the pilot states,” he said.
He lauded the Bauchi state governor for his unwavering support to the police in the state and urged him to extend the same gesture to the establishment of the squad in the state.
Reacting, Gov. Bala Mohammed thanked the I-G for selecting Bauchi state as one of the pilot states and promised to give all it takes to support the squad.
“We are ready to work with the police all through and I have always been doing that and that Special Intervention Squad you are establishing, we are very grateful that you are including us.
“Definitely, whatever support you need from us, we are going to give it because security is the main thing we need, it’s what we need to go to school, farm, markets and live a peaceful life,” said the governor.
