Correctional Service Vehicle Involved in Accident At Busy Emir’s Market, Ilorin
A vehicle belonging to the Nigerian Correctional Services on Thursday was involved in an accident at popular Emirs Market (Oja-Oba) in the Ilorin West Local Government area of Kwara State.
According to an eyewitness the accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday and reportedly crushed six people, who were rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
Five people were said to be been crushed at the Emirs Market and another one along Niger Road in Ilorin while the driver was trying to escape mob action.
The degree of injuries sustained was not ascertained at the time of filling this report.
A source said an angry mob who were disenchanted with the happening attacked and vandalised the bus escorting the inmate vehicle conveying the inmates to Court.
It was gathered that the van conveying the inmates escaped from the scene of the accident to its destination without any hitch.
The accident led to a protest by some group of Okada riders in the Ilorin metropolis.
Speaking with our reporter on the incident AbdulAkeem Sulaiman, who claimed to be the zonal spokesperson of the motorcycle riders association in the state urged the government to ensure justice for their members.
He said those crushed in the accident were out in search of their means of livelihood to feed their families.
Sulaiman appealed to the authority of the Nigeria Correctional Service and the state government to intervene in the matter and ensure Justice was done.
Confirming the incident the Spokesperson of Nigeria Police, Kwara State Police Command, SP Ajayi Okasanmi said normalcy has been restored in the areas where the protest took place.
He said the police would take necessary steps to ensure Justice is done for those affected by the incident.
Meanwhile, in its reaction, the Nigerian Correctional Service Kwara State Command alleged that the suspected hoodlums attempted to free inmates in the old Ilorin custodial centre in a statement issued and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service, Kwara State Command SC Adegbulugbe Philip Olumide said “Today, 19th of October 2023, at about 09:14 am, some hoodlums in a premeditated move at Ọja Oba roundabout boisterously made a tumultuous attempt to break into the convoy of the custodial vehicles conveying high profile inmates, which include, AbdulAzeez Adegbola (Tani Olohun) to the court. This resulted in a pandemonium which saw the Correctional vehicle damaged, shattered and battered.”
“These led to injuries sustained by both Okada riders and some of the custodial personnel. Two of the custodial vehicles which managed to secure their passage were again waylaid and attacked at Niger Road Junction. The personnel of the Correctional Service were able to manoeuvre their way to the court.
However, those who sustained injuries have been moved to the hospital for medical attention and are responding to treatment. NO LIVE WAS LOST SO FAR.
