UITH Runs on 10,000 Litres of Diesel to Power Its Generators — Management

The Management of the University of llorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has dismissed claims that the hospital is in total darkness, as it constantly runs on 10,000 litres of diesel to power all the electricity generating plants.
Mrs Elizabeth Ajiboye, the Director of Corporate Affairs Department of UITH disclosed this in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
She added that these generating plants in the hospital has significantly improved the electricity challenge at all service points in the hospital.
The hospital spokesperson observed that the erratic power supply is as a result of the collapse of our national grid, which has not only affected services in the hospital but the country as a whole.
According to her, the Management of UITH, led by Prof. Dasilva Yussuf, the Chief Medical Director, had recently concluded an arrangement with the Power Holding Company for a dedicated power line that guarantees an uninterrupted power supply for 20 hours.
She explained that the Management has never relented in working towards addressing challenges confronting the hospital.
“The 20 hours electricity supply will commence soon, which will boost power supply to the mortuary, theatre, wards, units and other critical areas of the hospital.
“This strategic arrangement was reached as a basement for alternative power supplies like; Solar and Generating Plants to the health institution.
“The fact that the mortuary wing of the hospital is on 24 hour services lend credence to the point being made on virile alternatives to electricity supply,” she said.
Ajiboye explained further that the hospital has been frantically working to ensure that activities are not grounded as result of this challenge.
She emphasised that with improvement in electricity distribution, supply of water has gradually improved with the effective use of over 15 boreholes dug at strategic locations of the hospital.
She observed that the allegation on diversion of patients of the UITH by health workers to their private facilities, Management has commenced investigation into the matter.
“We can assure the general public that appropriate disciplinary measures shall be taken against any erring staff in line with the public service rules.
“Rather than seeing the UITH as going down the drain, I want to say that the medical institution is waxing stronger by the day.
“This was attested to by the recent publication where UITH was ranked amongst the top 15 accredited healthcare institutions in Nigeria (2023),” she said.
Kwara residents had taken to social media to express their concerns about the conditions at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) and appealed to the Federal Government to assist the hospital to address its challenges.
They have alleged that the hospital is in a state of disrepair, with no power, water, or sterilization equipment. (NAN)
