Kwarans Seek FG’s Intervention In UITH Conditions As Management Reassures Public

Kwara residents have taken to social media to express their concerns about the precarious conditions at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), and appealed to President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to address the situation at the hospital.

Residents have alleged that the hospital is in a state of disrepair, with no power, water, or sterilization equipment.

They have also accused doctors and other health workers of diverting patients to their private practices.

The Management of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), while responding to the outcry from Kwarans, had dismissed claims that the hospital is in total darkness, as viral stories suggested.

In a statement signed by Mrs. E.O. Ajiboye, Head of the Corporate Affairs Unit (CAU) at UITH, it was acknowledged that the erratic power supply, caused by the collapse of the national grid, has affected services not only at the hospital but throughout the country.

However, the management assured that they have recently made arrangements with the Power Holding Company for a dedicated power line that guarantees an uninterrupted power supply for 20 hours.

This arrangement will commence fully by next week, boosting power supply to critical areas of the hospital such as the mortuary, theatre, wards, and units.

The management also mentioned their efforts to explore alternative power supplies such as solar and generating plants for the institution. The mortuary wing, which operates 24 hours a day, already utilizes these alternative power sources.

Regarding water supply, the management stated that with the improvement in electricity distribution, the supply of water has gradually improved. They have strategically dug over 15 boreholes at various locations within the hospital, and water tankers are used as a backup to ensure sufficient water supply.

On the matter of the alleged diversion of patients by health workers to their private facilities, the management assured that an investigation is underway, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against any staff found guilty of such actions.

The management emphasized their commitment to delivering quality healthcare to patients and highlighted UITH’s recent ranking among the top 15 accredited healthcare institutions in Nigeria for the year 2023.

In conclusion, the management called for the cooperation of patients and the general public, assuring them that UITH is continuously striving to improve its services.
