Old Students Donate Items To Alma Mata in Ekiti

The 1971-1975 set of the Doherty Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Ijero-Ekiti Old Students’ Association has donated items to the school during their reunion meeting held in the school hall.

Items donated were two Lawn mowers, 16 units of solar light, 1, 000 copies of customized exercise books, and medical equipment.

President of the 1971-1975 set of Doherty Memorial Grammar School Ijero-Ekiti, Prince Adewale Adeboboye presented the items to the school Principal, Prince Victor Amele at a ceremony on Friday in Ijero-Ekiti.

According to Prince Adeboboye, the donation worth over N1.5 million was the second in the series of what the 1971-1975 set planned to do for their Alma Mata.

Adeboboye added that the lawnmowers donated to the school would help in keeping the lawn well cut and wade off dangerous reptiles.

He told the gathering that the set donated 500 eighty leaves higher education exercise books in 2022, making the first project to be carried out by the set.

According to the president, the solar light would add help in illuminating the school at night and help students in boarding houses find their way around the school unhindered.

He, however, promised the principal of the set’s continuous support towards the progress of the school.

He explained that the old students were determined to contribute their quota for the school to rank among the best in the country.

Adeboboye charged the students to be focused on their academic pursuits so that they will become somebody in life.

Earlier, the chairperson of the Reunion Planning Committee, Mrs. Titilayo Ajibade (Nee Adewale) in her address of welcome expressed gratitude to God for making the reunion get-together a reality.

According to her, members of the 1971-1975 left the school 48 years ago as young boys and girls full of life, adding; “Today, we are back in the school as gathers, mothers and grandparents”.

Adewale thanked God for preserving the lives of members of the set, saying that many were meeting for the first time since they left the school in 1975.

“Sadly and unavoidably, many of us, over 22 as at the last count had passed to the great beyond.

“Most recently and painfully, we lost one of us, Mrs. Hannah Funso Fadairo (Nee Adesoro). We, therefore, pray for departed souls,” she said.

Adewale noted that the journey of the reunion started two years ago when Dr. Pastor Olugbenga Timothy Famojuro hosted members of the set in his house in Lagos.

“Our coming together this year tagged; “Reunion 2023” is the second, exactly a year ago, we were in the school for the book donation, this year is unique and an improvement on the last year’s outing,” she added.

Adewale, on behalf of the entire members of the 1971-1975 set appreciated all the invited guests for honouring the invitation.

Receiving the items, the Principal, Prince Amele thanked members for the set for what they have been doing for the school.

He promised that all the items donated would be judiciously utilized for the betterment of the school and the students.

Amele said DMGS is one of the best schools in Ekiti, adding that students of the schools were doing well in external examinations, especially UTME.

According to him, the least mark scored by students that sat for last UTME was 220.

He, however, said the school would continue to look up to the Alumni Association for assistance to move their Alma Mata forward.

Chairman of the Occasion, Major-General Funso Oyeneyin (rtd) admonished the student to be focused and face their studies with all seriousness.

He said there is no shortcut to success, but with a sound education, their chances of success in life are assured.

Oyeneyin, who is also an old student left the school in 1971 when members of the set were in form one.

He commended the 1971-1975 set for what they were doing for the school and called on other sets to emulate the gesture to lift their Alma Mata up.
